Abstract

The aging population is a global phenomenon that requires attention to
the quality of life of the elderly, given the series of biological, functional, social, and
psychological changes that occur. In Brazil, the elderly population grew from 4.0% in
1980 to 10.9% in 2022, highlighting the need for strategies that promote the health of
this group. This qualitative and descriptive study evaluated the effects of weight training
on the quality of life of the elderly through an integrative literature review, using data
from SciELO and LILACS from 2014 to 2025. Initially, 140 studies were found, of whichmaintaining the functionality and autonomy of the elderly, helping to combat the loss
of muscle strength and flexibility, as well as improving mental health and reducing
depressive symptoms. The study concludes that weight training should be encouraged
in programs for the elderly, but emphasizes the need for more research with larger
samples to better understand its impacts and guide public policies for active and
healthy aging.
