Introduction: The aging population in Brazil is experiencing rapid and frenetic growth, resulting
from various acquisitions and improvements in living conditions, leading to increased life
expectancy. Nursing professionals provide care aimed at ensuring well-being, comfort, and health,
with an emphasis on non-pharmacological treatment for the elderly. Objective: To gather scientific
evidence regarding nursing care in the mental health of the elderly. Method: This is an integrative
literature review that consists of constructing a broad analysis of the literature, contributing to
discussions on research methods and results, as well as reflections on the conduct of future studies.
The databases BVS, Scielo, and Lilacs were consulted. Results: It was found that nursing plays a
central role in promoting quality of life and psychosocial support, acting as a link between the
elderly, the family, and the multidisciplinary team. The main findings indicate the need for holistic
and individualized care, utilizing therapeutic communication and active listening as primary tools,
in addition to focusing on health education for older adults, family members, and caregivers.
Conclusion: Nursing care is an irreplaceable pillar for promoting mental health in old age, and the
implementation of sensitive and evidence-based care is essential to ensure aging with dignity,
autonomy, and psychological well-being.
