Traffic accidents have a wide variety of negative impacts on the population. Among the most
concerning or frequent are the loss of years of life free from disease, physical and psychological
disability, reduced life expectancy, high social, legal and economic costs, as well as overburdening the
health and social security systems. As justification, this research can contribute to studies in the health
field, more specifically in the field of nursing, as well as to the construction or improvement of public
policy actions in the city of Sumé – PB, aiming at raising awareness for life and the necessary care
when driving. Methodologically, this study follows bibliographic characteristics and can be classified
as descriptive-exploratory research, as well as qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and also a case
study. As a data collection instrument, data on traffic accidents involving motorcycle drivers who were
attended by the Mobile Emergency Care Service – SAMU are presented. As a result, it was found that
all 74 cases analyzed, whose data are recorded in the medical records, represent a serious public health
problem, as lives were lost, alcohol use combined with driving remains the most frequently observed
infraction in these traffic accident cases, and the costs to public health increase each year.
