Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding is necessary and the most appropriate method,
considering the various benefits it provides, such as the bond between mother and
child. In addition to all the guarantees for the baby's healthy development, skin-to-skin
contact, nutritional advantages as a source of vitamins, immunological protection
against diseases, and other socio-economic aspects make it a contaminant-free food
that does not generate costs. Objectives: To identify the knowledge of pregnant and
postpartum women regarding the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months
and complementary breastfeeding until two years; to guide pregnant and postpartum
women on the importance and benefits of breastfeeding; to investigate, through
literature research, the difficulties encountered by pregnant and postpartum women in
breastfeeding; to identify strategies that contribute to guiding pregnant and postpartum
women in the introduction of breastfeeding. Methodology: This is an integrative review,
with a qualitative approach, of an exploratory and descriptive nature. Results: Most
pregnant women are aware of the duration of breastfeeding, but some do not
understand its importance. Conclusion: Nurses play an important role in guiding
pregnant women so that exclusive breastfeeding is performed appropriately.
