VACCINATION PROPHYLAXIS IN THE YOUNG POPULATION WITH EMPHASIS ON HPV: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

HPV infection has become relevant when identifying oncogenic viral types associated with the
development of cancer. Because HPV transmission is sexual, the target population is sexually
active, and young girls and boys are included in the prevention group through HPV vaccinations.
This study aims to analyze the possible causes of young people's non-attendance for HPV
vaccination. This is an integrative literature review that consists of a comprehensive analysis of
the literature, contributing to discussions on research methods and results, as well as reflections
on future studies. The data collected in the Scielo, Lilacs, and BVS databases showed that low
adherence is not a simplistic phenomenon, but rather the result of the intersection of multiple
barriers, encompassing social, cultural, structural, and individual dimensions. Among the crucial factors identified are lack of knowledge or incorrect information about the vaccine, its safety,
efficacy, and the risk associated with HPV, the perception of low risk of infection in young
people, and the influence of beliefs and myths, such as the association of vaccination with
encouraging early sexual activity, which generates resistance among parents, guardians, and
young people themselves. High HPV vaccination coverage is believed to be a fundamental public
health step for primary cancer prevention in future generations.
